Yes and EduSpec Launch Malaysia’s First Chrome Lab at SRJKC Choong Wen

Chrome Lab comes fully equipped with Yes 4G Chromebooks to facilitate Internet-enabled education for all anytime, anywhere
Kuala Lumpur, 25 April 2013 – Yes, Malaysia’s fastest 4G mobile Internet with voice service provider, together with K-12 IT Literacy Materials provider Eduspec, SRJKC Choong Wen’s Parent Teacher’s Association (Persatuan Ibubapa dan Guru or PIBG) and the School Board of Directors, today launched Malaysia’s first Chrome Lab at the School. The Chrome Lab – jointly built by the PIBG as well as the School Board and fitted by EduSpec – is fully equipped with Yes 4G Chromebook units donated by YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms). The Lab is also powered by Yes 4G mobile Internet.

The launch of Chrome Lab was jointly officiated by Deputy Education Minister, YB Datuk Ir Dr. Wee Ka Siong, YTL Group Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay, EduSpec CEO, Mr. Lim Een Hong, and Chairman of the Choong Wen School Board of Directors, Mr. Ong Kian Sim.

The Chrome Lab will give students and teachers access to vast global resources thus facilitating learning and collaboration beyond the classroom. The pilot project falls in line with YTL’s commitment to transform education and empower students to learn beyond boundaries by harnessing the power of high-speed 4G Internet and the use of a cloud 4G-enabled Internet device.

“At YTL we are committed to transforming education in Malaysia by enabling our students to have access to the best the world has to offer. With so much information and so many resources available today through the Internet, there are huge opportunities for learning. We need to ensure that our students are not left out and that they are able to tap into these resources to make learning better and more engaging. Today Choong Wen joins the group of schools worldwide that have found the Chromebook indispensable. Choong Wen students will be the first in Malaysia to experience virtual learning at 4G Internet speed,” said YTL Group Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay.

The Lab is another milestone in Choong Wen’s educational transformation. Under the pilot project, Choong Wen students will be the first in Malaysia to experience the Yes 4G Chromebook which is optimised to work seamlessly with FrogAsia’s cloud-based Frog Virtual Learning Environment (Frog VLE), which is being implemented in government schools, and Yes mobile 4G Internet.

Deputy Education Minister, YB Datuk Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, said Chrome Lab is the perfect example of how schools can implement world-class learning and nurture industry-ready Malaysian talent.

“I must applaud YTL Comms, EduSpec and Choong Wen school for realising their shared vision to transform education with the latest tools and technology. It is truly wonderful to see their efforts run in parallel with the government’s own vision, particularly the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025,” Wee said. “Introducing our nation’s students to the exciting field of ICT is an obvious step in modernising the Malaysian education system. We look forward to seeing more schools follow in Choong Wen’s footsteps.”

Each Yes 4G Chromebook has a built-in 4G chip to enable seamless and constant connectivity to the fastest 4G mobile Internet, and runs on the Chrome operating system, which offers multiple layers of security, cloud storage and Google Apps for Education. The Chromebook is also ideal for education because of it’s easy maintenance and stays continuously current with self-updates. This makes it a cost-effective solution for any school to incorporate cloud-based learning.

EduSpec’s Lim said: “The Chrome Lab is an ideal environment for students and teachers to collaborate and explore educational materials via the Frog Virtual Learning Environment and from around the world. The Lab is a conducive environment that we hope will inspire students and promote creativity, collaboration and the sharing of ideas amongst schoolmates.”

“I’d like to commend the parents and teachers of Choong Wen’s Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) for their incredible foresight and their contribution. Without their support, the Chrome Lab remains just an idea,” Lim continued.

The Yes 4G Chromebook is slated to launch commercially later this year.
